Evening view – Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown

My first adventure on the slopes was a few years ago in Thredbo, and let me tell you, it was nothing short of magical! Nestled in a charming ski chalet just a stone’s throw from Friday Flats, we experienced a winter wonderland like no other. Picture this: snowflakes falling gracefully outside while we cozied up by the crackling fireplace sipping red wine, our hearts swelling with anticipation for an unforgettable ski season! After a whole day on the slopes the fresh hot donuts and hot chocolate are to die for!

Fast forward a few years, and I found myself in breathtaking Queenstown, New Zealand, for a special mum-and-daughter birthday trip. With both our birthdays in August, we were blessed with the promise of at least two spectacular snow dumps—pure perfection! This quaint and picturesque town, embraced by shimmering lakes and majestic mountains, captured our hearts instantly. As the locals cheerfully said, “Sorry about the weather!” on a rainy day, I couldn’t help but feel the warmth of the community.

On Day 1, we hit the slopes and were greeted by awe-inspiring, stark white mountains that seemed to stretch indefinitely. The invigorating chill nipped at our noses as we joined the bustling throngs of skiers waiting for the chair lifts. The joyous laughter and the striking sound of the bell ringing at the top of the hill only added to my excitement for the adventure ahead!

Of course, every great adventure comes with its own set of lessons learned:

  • Run Cautionary Tales: Never assume the green run on one mountain is like another! Different countries boast different terrains. I quickly realized that the green run at Coronet Peak felt more like the blue run back at Thredbo. Always start with the learner’s slope to get your bearings. • Quality Gear Matters: Invest in a quality snow jacket and pants with ample pockets. The weather can change in the blink of an eye! Imagine this: a beautiful snowy night turns into a sunlit morning, and you find yourself sweating while waddling like a penguin back to the magic carpet—it’s hard work! Make sure you have layers; otherwise, you’ll regret it when the weather suddenly shifts, and you’re left looking for warmth in a blizzard! Do not skimp on gloves! While ski pants can be more forgiving, cheap gloves are a recipe for disaster. Trust me, frostbitten fingers from a day of skiing in wet gloves don’t make for happy trails. This is where I stocked up on my quality ski gear Shop Women’s Ski & Snow Jackets
  • Coffee Caution: Seriously, skip the pre-lesson coffee! Even though the ski center has facilities, do you want to risk clambering down the steps in clunky ski boots an hour into the lesson? I think not! Feel free to grab a bite before or after your slopy adventure here Home – Fergburger. Don’t skip fresh donuts and hot chocolate on Friday flats in Thredbo.

  • Accommodation Preferences: I loved Coronet Peak more than Thredbo, but there’s a trade-off. Thredbo is closer to the city center, while Queenstown, although small, has a 35-minute separation from your hotel to the heart of town. If you prefer a luxurious hotel with a spa, sauna, and pool, that’s worth considering! We stayed at the Hilton which boasts of one of the best day spas in Queenstown Queenstown Day Spa | eforea spa at Hilton Queenstown Hotel. A definite yes to soother those mangled muscles. If your preference is to stay closer to town center and still have a luxurious stay check out Sofitel Queenstown Hotel and Spa – Where life lives. Another advantage of staying close to the slopes is being able to watch night skiiers doing their runs, and of course enjoy the Apres ski ambience.

  • Safety First—Always Wear a Helmet: I took a tumble 13 times, and let’s just say my helmet saved me from becoming a human piñata! Falling can be fun, but safety is essential, and the helmet spared me any concussions. Check this site out for more Ski and Snow Helmets – Snowscene
  • Capture the Memories: During my New Zealand trip, I tried out an action camera. Using a handheld, selfie-stick-style camera with a wide-angle lens made my footage pop, capturing the scenery beautifully. I loved how professional it looked with a clear plastic waterproof cover too! Besides, it’s nice to have some quality shots in addition to the phone pics. Check this compact magic of a gadget out Action Camera | 4k, Waterproof, Image Stablization for Sports – AKASO. Just look at the quality! and it can also take videos both with and without sound.

  • Professional Ski Fitting: Finally, if you don’t own your ski gear, make sure to get your skis professionally fitted based on your size, weight, and height. It’ll elevate your skiing experience tremendously! • Private lessons – Get private lessons if you can afford them. It will propel your learning a thousand fold and make your experience so much more enjoyable. Be warned though, the first time, first day will hurt like hell!
