From Hubris to Ash

Spread the love
Herbert Draper The Lament For Icarus 1898
The Lament of Icarus, Oil on canvas by Herbert James Draper, 1898

If you unravel the yarn too fast,

you’ll end up tying your mind in knots.

The threads of fate remember what’s forgot,

patience weaves a truth to last.

Rage, like the riptide, pulls you under,

down where stillness swallows sound,

into the quiet of final abandonment,

ominous depths where silence breaks asunder.

Give in to the bloodlust life inspires,

it will consume you like devouring fire.

Ash to earth is your solemn penance,

your spirit marked by final atonement.

Climb too high and clouds conspire,

thunder will speak your mortal downfall.

The mountain’s heart ignores your hubris,

stunned rapture now your last desire.

The stars care not for mortal dare,

they burn and fade to their heart’s content.

Obey their light and stay reverent,

they choose their strength in impermanence.

So bow to rain, to stone, to air,

for those who tread with grace, not vain intent,

their legacy carved, their power grown

defy, and none will heed your prayer.
