The Power of Setting Daily Intentions for Presence and Purpose

Recap on Steps to Staying Present

In my last two blogposts I explored the invisible forces that are keeping us from being present. I tackled the topic of resisting the moment as the single biggest barrier to presence. Overcoming this resistance starts with noticing it, investigating it’s source and then consciously letting go.

When we stop resisting, we stop fighting. We set down our weapons and surrender to life as it unfolds. Instead of trying to control we become open to receiving. Events don’t change with our ‘interference’ or ‘intervention’ – only our reaction to them does.

So how to we stay in that space? I believe, it is by setting an intention, daily or even hourly, if needed.

What Are Daily Intentions?

Unlike goals, which focus on external achievements, daily intentions are about how you want to move through the day. They are mindful commitments to yourself—whether it’s being more patient, staying focused, or practicing gratitude.

Why Do Daily Intentions Work?

Each day presents a choice: will we move through it consciously, or will we resist the moment as it unfolds? By defining how you want to engage with the present, you create space for awareness instead of tension. By setting an intention, we choose how we meet the moment.

Releasing Resistance Through Daily Intention

Letting go of resistance isn’t about forcing relaxation—it’s about shifting perspective. Intentions help by:

  • Bringing clarity to what is truly important to you.
  • Cultivating gratitude for what the moment holds instead of longing for what’s missing.
  • Making space for growth by surrendering control over what cannot be changed.

When you find attention drifting away, ask yourself not just what resistance you’re holding onto and why, but also how you can soften into this moment. From this place of awareness, set an intention that invites ease rather than struggle. Then use it the next time your attention is kidnapped by the raging train of thoughts. The ripple effect of setting a daily intention over time is profound.
Over time, you may find yourself less reactive, more patient, and deeply connected to the flow of life.

My favorite two intentions are “Go slow to go fast” and “Kindness to Self“. What’ll be your favorite intention for the day?
