When learning to fly, pilots learn the ‘1 in 60’ rule. It states that a 1-degree heading error puts them about 1 mile off course for every 60 miles flown. On a 3,000-mile transatlantic flight, that single degree lands you roughly 50 miles from where you meant to be, which can mean a different country. The surprising part is what speed does to that error: nothing good! Flying twice as fast doesn’t shrink the miss, it just gets you to the wrong place in half the time. Pilots schedule navigation checks by distance flown, not by clock time. The pilot sets the correction interval based on progress, since speed matters only after you align your heading.
