Variety is Verity! Discovering New Workout Styles

First thing, I walked in blind. I booked this place on the Mind Body app. I rocked up for an ‘all levels’ class as I interpreted this as beginners inclusive. I was informed by a very cheerful owner prior experience was expected! That said, the owner, Sing, was very friendly and welcoming and decided to demo some moves! As the group session began, he queried me to gauge my level of interest in boxing. The only thing that came close was watching Ong Bak movies (they feature a more traditional style of Muay Thai). With that, we started practicing some punches and the stance. The first thing that struck me as a little odd was the rhythmic to-ing and fro-ing in the stance. You don’t stand still. Apparently, it’s to be ready to strike any moment, like the shuffle in boxing/kickboxing, I suppose? As I got familiar with the moves, I started hitting with a bit more accuracy and power. I won’t say it came naturally and the routine tired me out REAL quick!! Simple yet hard. 40 minutes into this session and I was tired as a battle horse! I slept like a baby that night! Key features about Payak Muay Thai: Energetic vibe, authentic style. They even play some authentic Thai music, really getting into character. Check out Payak Muay Thai at Payak Muay Thai | Sydney Muay Thai Gym | 8/201 Parramatta Road, Homebush NSW, Australia. Giving this experience a rating of 8/10.

Paint and Sip night-out

As the busy work week drew to a close, excitement pulsed through my fingertips, typing the final emails on Friday afternoon. Opting for a simple black dress paired with a denim jacket topped off with my favorite baker boy hat, I was ready to dive into the experience.

Entering the studio in the rain, I juggled my umbrella, a bottle of wine, and my trusty baker boy hat, only to find my friends already there, kitted up in colorful, paint-splattered aprons. Our instructor revealed the theme for the night: R&B, setting the tone with a playlist to match. Our feature painting displayed a captivating portrayal of a Moorish lady. With excitement mounting, I donned my apron and made a beeline for the wine selection, opting for a bold red to fuel my creative spirit.

Mindfulness

Here are some of my tried and tested tips to cultivate mindfulness into your life:

Establish a regular mindfulness practice to anchor yourself in the present moment. A 5-minute seated meditation practice, done consistently over a period of time can bring significant improvement in our ability to stay engaged in the present moment for longer. Insight Timer — #1 Free Meditation App is my go-to app for a quick mindfulness breathing practice.
Practicing Single-tasking – Despite being contradictory to my blog name, I’m a big fan of focusing on one activity at a time. For example, when I eat a meal, I pay full attention to the taste, texture, and sensation of each bite, rather than eating while checking emails or watching TV. Using a time blocking daily schedule helps me zone into the one task at hand. Try designing yours with this – Daily Time Blocking Schedule | Free Printable Download (moritzfinedesigns.com)
Reduce Technological distractions – Set some boundaries for device usage by designating tech-free time & spaces. Aim to replace the temptation to reach for your phone by 1 to 5-minute-deep breathing session. in my experience, it’s the best way to bring your heart rate down and reset your focus. Journaling is another way to be productive while being off the grid.
Avoid the ‘Busyness’ Culture – I’m often guilty of this one! However, I’ve come to realize that setting realistic expectations and giving myself rest and recovery time helps immensely with performance and output. It’s quality over quantity!
Practice ‘Mindful moments’ – Engaging the mind and senses fully in mundane daily tasks is a great way to introduce mindfulness into your day. Whenever you catch yourself dwelling on the past or worrying about the future, strive to bring conscious awareness to the task at hand by noticing the sights, sounds, smell, textures, temperature etc. around you. There’s magic to be found in every moment! Remember to start small and build on these habits slowly.
